Chapter eighteen

There were more than a dozen different hotels lined up along the water’s edge. We picked the one that looked the nicest, and I paid for the best available suite that they had.

With my hero status currently suspended, I could no longer claim any fees for doing hero work. But the money I’d already earned during my time in this world was substantial.

Perhaps I wouldn’t have been able to stay in that hotel, in that suite, for an extended time. But for a single night? I could afford that easily enough.

And besides, after everything that had happened recently, I figured I deserved a little luxury.

The suite was on the top floor, and it was palatial. My place back in New Chicago could have fit in the main room, and then some.

The ceilings were twice as high as usual, the walls done in tasteful dark marble, and there was a crystal chandelier that must have been made of more than a thousand pieces in the middle of it all.

And the furniture. Each piece was oversized and overstuffed as well, and seemed designed to meet the exacting requirements of both luxury and comfort at once.

The massive couch would have seated five comfortably, and came with rich, tasseled cushions and an expensive, velvety throw.

And if that wasn’t enough to suggest over-the-top opulence, there was even a baby grand piano off to one side, and what looked to be a full bar.

Tiffany and I were still dripping from our time on the boat, but the diminutive pixie-like woman was grinning broadly.

“Well,” she said. “You really know how to make a girl feel special!”

I matched her grin with one of my own. “What can I say?” I asked. “I figured if this is supposed to be an opportunity to decompress, why not go all out?”

“Why not indeed?” Tiff responded.

All of a sudden, she seemed to forget our agreement to pretend to be normal. She seemed to flicker in place, and I thought I caught glimpses of her speeding around the suite, investigating all of the different rooms before returning to my side.

“You should see the rest of this place!” she said, speaking a little faster than usual. “It’s got a full kitchen, two separate bathrooms done in gold and silver, and three bedrooms all striving to be the master! It’s like they designed this place for a king or maybe some kind of movie star! I’ve never seen anything like it!”

I grinned at the effervescent woman and used one of her gestures back at her. I raised one of my eyebrows.

“I thought we had agreed to act as if we were normal?” I said.

Tiff’s expression became one of surprise. She colored quickly once more, but her blush swiftly faded, replaced by a very broad grin.

“So we did,” she said. “I guess I got a little carried away.”

She gazed at me, the heat in her expression dialing up a couple of notches. “Speaking of which,” she said.

Instead of completing her sentence, she started beating her wings, until she was hovering before me.
